This session will provide an overview of the University of Richmond’s student-produced digital stories series, the challenge of identifying a web-based archival system, and how the Omeka web publishing platform effectively met these challenges without requiring the specialized knowledge of web programming, costly database management and a cadre of server administrators.
In an attempt to organize a web-based portfolio of student work, The Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology at the University of Richmond developed an online collection of student-produced digital stories using Omeka, a free, open source web publishing platform. These digital stories exist as a collection of items, embedded from YouTube, that contain additional metadata identifying the author, production date, script, and other contextual elements.
The requirements for this portfolio were that it be cost effective, its support be sustainable, and its interface be easy to use and modify. Omeka met these needs, and was selected over WordPress because of its simple interface, customizable design, and supportive community of educational technologists and librarians.
